Spiritual problem solving is much different than the techniques generally taught by parents, schools or communities. It works by maintaining integrity with spiritual principles, focusing inwardly through the process and attracting the solution effortlessly. The typical ways to solve problems are pretty much the same, whether the problem may be regarding relationships, family, work, play, an illness or a new purchase. We are generally taught to focus our energy outwards. Analysis and intellectual evaluations take the lead, often to the point that our mind is consumed by the problem. If the life problem is important enough to us, we may also feel justified stepping on other people's toes, or pushing through towards our goal, even if it is at the expense of others. Accumulating debt, being dishonest and manipulating others are all normal behaviors. We may neglect ourselves and those close to us.
If we are successful, but have under emphasized spiritual principles along the way, we are likely to find that our satisfaction is short-lived. Soon we need something else to change in life, and our happiness costs more time and money to maintain. Our life becomes busier and more complicated. Our relationships with other people may feel distant or become primarily a source of frustration. The emphasis in spiritual problem solving is much different and the ability to attract a solution, almost magically, speaks for itself.
The most important spiritual principle to understand, when it comes to problem solving, is the law of cause and effect. This is known as the law of karma in the east, or "that which is done to others, is done to you" in the west. This reality of this rebound effect is under estimated, because it can be delayed and because it applies to your inner attitude and wishes, not just outer actions. Understanding this principle fully is crucial, because it says that your inner wishes and deeds decide your future happiness, not worldly achievements such as accumulating money, career status, or popularity. It supports a selfless mentality, because the process of making other people deeply happy is the pathway to your own happiness.
Regardless of the outer "face" on a life problem, we are all after one thing, happiness. If we really want to achieve lasting happiness, we will need to have strong, positive and spiritual life goal. All worldly goals that we might need to achieve, should be checked to see if they support that spiritual goal or not. It makes no sense investing time, energy and money on a worldly goal without a deeper spiritual purpose. Some day we will definitely loose it. Regardless of our age, a loss is painful. The beauty of spiritual goals, is that they are lasting. They lead to a deepening of happiness.
The spiritual technique for problem solving is often called manifesting or law of attraction, because the emphasis is on your intentions being the primary driving force, instead of trying to make things happen, solely through outward efforts. Certainly outward efforts need to be made. You need to use common sense to consider different options and outcomes. You may need to devote a considerable amounts of time, energy and money depending on the problem being solved. However, spiritual principle's must always take the lead. Outward efforts should be reconsidered if they require you to compromise on any major spiritual principle, such as:
1. The law of cause and effect
2. Being debt free (including mortgages and student loans)
3. Honesty
4. Freedom (including pressuring other people to go along with your plan, when they don't want to naturally)
5. Peace (peace of mind is more important than allowing the mind to ruminate on the problem)
If you choose a worldly goal, with a spiritual purpose and fuel your wishes with by maintaining spiritual integrity along the way, you will find the solution arises effortlessly. The deeper that you are spiritually inspired, the deeper the happiness you experience. If you are unsuccessful, it maybe that the time is not right. You may need to solve different problems first, before tackling the one you want solved now. If your experience excessive resistance from the world or find that you just have to compromise on certain spiritual principles it is likely that your conscious desires are in direct conflict with the needs of your heart and soul. In such case, life becomes an uphill battle. Go back to the law of cause and effect, and ask yourself "Does this goal help support the happiness of others?". If not, its time to go back to the drawing board.
Applying spiritual principles to solve life problems is the focal point of my mind body spirit clinic and I have been using these techniques intensely in my life for over 5 years. I will share one concrete example of how I used these techniques to solve a substantial life problem.
In 2010, it was time for me to move. I had been living in a small one bedroom apartment. It had served me well. It was inexpensive, during a period in my life when I had tons of debt and expenses which I was paying off. I had chosen the location because it was close to a clinic that I had expected to work at often, but it turned out that I rarely worked at that location. I decided it was time to move closer to my kids. Here is a contrast and comparison of how I previously went about finding a new home versus using spiritual techniques.
In the past: All my energy was directed outwards. I would search for months before I was ready to move, even when I knew the homes available at that time, wouldn't likely be around when it was time for me to move. I wanted to know exactly what the market was like and be able to have a good comparison when I finally found a potential candidate. Of course that is smart, but I would take it to an extreme. I would make lots of calls, look at lots of homes and compare and contrast options for hours. The entire process would consume my mind for weeks, if not months. Every time I would drive around town, my eyes would dart back and forth in "hunting mode". I was a bit neurotic. In hind sight, I'm sure that my obsession with home hunting, detracted from the quality of my normal day to day duties. I was not fully present with my work and home responsibilities, which caused me to neglect the relationships in my life.
New Experience: My energy was directed primarily inwards. Sure, I did look around a bit and check out prices and options. But I was forced to abandon a premature search, because what I wished to find, was almost non-existent in the city I needed to move to. Particularly I wanted a spacious, secluded type of home setting with lots of large trees. This was rare in Warren, Michigan, which is a industrial metropolitan city. Most of the homes with some seclusion, were large homes outside of my budget and much more then I could use or need. However I did notice there were two very small pockets of neighborhoods that might work. At first glance, there where no homes for rent in these neighborhoods though. I knew it would be a complete blessing to find what I really wanted at the time I could move. So I psychologically surrendered the process of finding this home, to God. Part of the surrendering, was letting go of my apartment in advance of having the home. I was hoping to keep it until I knew for sure
I had a place to move to. However, I would have been forced to be dishonest with my landlord, to do this. I knew that wasn't right. Another part of the surrendering, was letting go of the obsession of thinking about the new place. I continued with my typical work and family responsibilities, giving them all my attention. I meditated daily, a long time spiritual practice of mine, that helps me tame my mind from focusing on problems. I did not start looking until just a few weeks before I intended to move. Before looking, I created a list of features that were important to me in this new home:
1. Spacious natural setting with mature trees
2. Small two bedroom home
3. Quiet, safe neighborhood for my kids to play in
4. Space to garden
5. Cool landlord
6. Close to my kid's home
7. On the border of a residential and commercial region (to facilitate use as a potential home office)
I sent out my intentions by reading the list as I looked at myself in a mirror. This technique forced me to be sincere. I then let go and allowed my intentions be a source of attraction. This technique is important, however the fuel which turns thoughts into reality, is the deep heartfelt sincerity a request contains. This sincerity is achieved through a spiritually inspired life. Leading up to this experience, I had been working intensely on changing my life so that my work and free time was all spiritually beneficial. These changes included letting go of a lucrative job in a resort town, accepting less desirable travel work, going through a divorce and training for an entirely different type of career. I know for certain that the energy put into these changes, which I believed deeply in, fueled my intentions. I work hard to be useful for my community, and then when I have a need, I feel that deep down I deserve it.
When I finally looked for a home, I was amazed to find only ONE potential candidate that was the correct size and in the city I was searching in. That home met ALL of the above mentioned qualities. It even had a dozen mature fruit trees (apple, pear, cherries) on an acre of land! In the past, I would have been hesitant to let the landlord know how excited I was about a home, so that I could keep my bargaining power. That didn't feel right to me this time. Immediately I let the landlord know that I loved the home. Surprisingly, he was still open to bargaining, and HE preferred that it be a month to month commitment... another feature I wanted, but never actually listed!
The reward of that experience went much deeper than just a nice home to live in. Through my life experience, I came to see the power of my wishes and deeds, when spiritually oriented. It has strengthened by faith in my spiritual path, and my confidence in problem solving. It has built the foundation for wellness in my life, including a healthy mind and body. Long after I leave that home, I will be enjoying the benefits of that experience. If your life seems like an uphill battle, it is time to learn to apply spiritual problem solving techniques.
