The Pothole of Meritocratic Education

We fall into it. Attracted by the tantalizing myths of academic equality, the majority take up student loans and enjoy the so-called benefits of meritocratic education where background and circumstances do not in any way affect your horizons. Armed with our youthful vitality and exuberance, we march on, degrees in hand, searching for that "dream job".

Years later, the mundane lull of working life kicks in. Not to forget your study loan you're still forking out for in instalments, a gaping hole in your monthly paycheck. The system has been accommodating towards the financially disadvantaged, but the devious cycle of underachievement is as stark as ever, a huge eyesore in a society where grade inflation is commonplace.

The human environment is the ultimate shaper of where we go, at least in most cases. Children with bountiful potential fall through the cracks when they quit school to support their family finances, in the more adverse situations. Those who manage to do well enough to further their studies abroad at prestigious institutions are hampered by nothing else but the lack of money.

Family has an intrinsic and overwhelming say in where we end up in life. Not to say that it is right to resent our family just because they are not loaded, but it would help us do better in life if we are aware of where we stand and the challenged, however subtle and tactful, we face in our quest for ultimate equality for various opportunities. Some say that money can buy almost everything; the harsh, brutal; truth and nothing but.

Is it really fair?
