The other day I gave a speech at a local college to some business students and re ran well over the prescribed time due to questions and answers. I told everyone that I didn't mind if they didn't and I'd answer all their questions well into the night if they thought they could handle it - I bet some would have agreed. Finally, the professor had to go to teach another class as he had ditched his interim downtime due to the over-extended frank dialogue and questions. I told a group of students if they wanted to buy the food, we could take the discussion into the cafeteria.
Well, about $7.45 later, meaning the eight remaining students all chipped in a dollar each with money to spare - we were eating and carrying on.
One thing I noted is that the place looked very much like the United Nations, equal amounts of all nationalities, races, sizes and shapes. But one nationality seemed to be under-represented, it was the ethic group which was once considered the majority for the area, although that had changed now. There just were not that many white kids. I thought to myself how unfortunate that is, but I do understand how this predicament has come to be; Affirmative Action type quotas.
As you probably know the Supreme Court is hearing the case where in Michigan, they had enough of Affirmative Action and had banned it. I am uncertain if that is the right solution, but that's what they did. Personally, as a former athlete, entrepreneur, writer and coordinator for a Think Tank I don't give a damn what race someone is - I just want the best person (or AI robot) for the job. I only care about achievement, winning, and doing it right - whatever it takes - and whomever can do it.
It seems unfortunate that we are helping folks into college and into expensive student loans based on race rather than achievement - oh don't get me wrong many of these kids are incredibly competent, but not all. Either way, they have all now joined the economically enslaved, and will be working their tails off paying student loans until well into their 30s - that is "IF" they can stay gainfully employed, and statistics show that only 15% in the next 20-years will be in fields related to their degrees.
What are we doing? It's as if something that was supposed to help minorities is economically enslaving them, and something that was supposed to help our melting pot is hurting our productivity and slipping us into mediocrity. If you'd like to debate this topic - sure, let's talk, in fact, let's talk common sense without the political correctness. That's what I did with these kids, and they agreed, in fact a few of the minority students were angry because they are afraid that people will think they only got into college or a job because of their race, not because they deserved it. That's an unfortunate place to be, that's not what Affirmative Action was intended to be. Please consider all this and think on it.
