Pros and Cons of Going to an Out of State College

Many high school grads are plagued with the burden of deciding whether to go to school in the state or out of state. Many decisions are based upon acceptance, whether the student wants to be close to family, or whether college students want to pursue a specialty at a reputable college. This article discusses some of the pros and cons of going out of state to pursue a higher education.

Let's begin with the pros:

New Beginnings - when students break free from the routine, as well as being in close proximity to family and friends, independence and responsibility can be fostered.

Networking - out of state colleges present many networking opportunities that could be beneficial in career and business growth in the long term. Many successful men and women account at least a part of their success to whom they know.

Scholarships - may be presented in another state that would not be available in your current state. The same can be said for in state colleges, which may provide scholarships and grants to residents only.

Cons of Going to College Out of State

Higher Tuition Costs - many in-state colleges will have a discounted fee for residents, while out of state colleges are at least 50% higher according to U.S. News & World Report. And another study by Bank Rate purported that the median costs of out of state tuition per year is $17,785 for 2012. In addition, students will need to add living expenses that could be waived in their home state. Students however, should not be deterred to pursue out of state colleges based on costs alone. Scholarships, waivers, and student loans can all be added to the final balance to reduce the cost drastically.

Being Away From Family - can seem like a blessing or curse depending on the situation. On one side of the coin, students get to venture out and be independent citizens to some extent. On the other hand, there is no present support system in moments of crises such as illness or a gloomy day.

Regardless of whether a student decides to pursue in or out of state college, there are options to study online, while working simultaneously. This option is especially useful for students who would like to whet their feet in complete independence. Online degree college costs also vary based on the school of choice, but financial aid is usually available for this option nevertheless.

Work and study conveniently with the flexibility of an online college.
