Student Loan Debt By the Numbers

Most everyone knows these days that student loan debt is a pressing issue. Millions of young college grads are coming out of school facing huge debt burdens and an inability to find the high-paying jobs to cover the repayment of these debts. The economy is not able to support the number of graduates, and with student loan debt not dischargeable in bankruptcy, many are finding themselves unable to dig their way out of their debt burden.

National Student Loan Debt $1 Trillion

The latest estimates have U.S. student loan debt at just under or right around $1 trillion dollars, depending on the source of the information. The average college graduate owes more than $26,000 in loans by the time he or she receives a diploma.

Some people blame the easy availability of federal funds for the rise in these numbers, while some point to factors such as for-profit institutions offering high interest loans to potential candidates and using recruitment techniques with misleading information about the availability of jobs for graduates.

Federal student loans are available to just about anyone who applies to go to college, a fact which some experts have pointed to as a major source of problems with individual student loan debt. While not dischargeable in bankruptcy, federal student loan debt does have a variety of built-in protections like deferment and forbearance, as well as income-based repayment options for those struggling to make payments. In addition the federal interest rate has been fixed at a manageable percentage for some time, although recent legislation could be set to increase it.

A major point of contention has been the high interest private loans offered by companies for borrowers in graduate school and enrolling in for-profit institutions. These high-interest loans do not feature the same built-in protection that federally backed loans do, and yet are still non-dischargeable in bankruptcy. What this means is that more and more often students of higher education and for-profit institutions are graduating with student loan debt at much higher interest rates than the federal levels, featuring none of the income-based protection that federal loans boast. These graduates are denied the protection of bankruptcy offered to other loans of this type, such as credit card debt, to which private student loan debt is more closely related. The upshot of all this is a growing body of people who are unable to find the types of job opportunities their degrees should afford them, and equally unable to get any relief from their debts, which can quickly threaten to overwhelm them.

Many experts are actively lobbying to fix this issue, and hopefully a solution to the problem will come in the near future.

How Your Credit Score Works

Your credit score is a crucial aspect of your personal finance. There are 3 major credit bureaus that comprise your credit report: Equifax, Experion, and TransUnion. The credit score is a number that is derived from the information on your credit file.

Why is your credit score so important?

Simply put, having a good credit score will save you money. If you have a good credit score, you'll be able to negotiate the best rates on loans. This may include car loans, mortgages, student loans, or any other type of loan. Someone with a high interest rate on a loan will have to pay more money during the life of the loan. Someone who has a low interest rate will end up paying less money over the life of the loan.

What makes up your credit score?

According to FICO, there are 5 metrics that comprise your credit score:

35% Payment History - If you pay your bills on time, your score improves. If you pay them late, your score drops.

30% Credit Utilization - You should aim to use about 10 percent of your credit limit every month, but no more than 25 percent. This will keep your credit utilization ratio in good standing. Also, do not close your credit card accounts unnecessarily because this will adversely affect your utilization ratio.

15% Length of Credit History - The longer you have a credit history, the better your score. It's important to constantly use your credit cards from month to month to keep them revolving. If you don't use them, your account will be shut down and your history will be impacted.

10% Types of Credit - Lenders want to see that you have a well rounded borrowing history, so it makes sense that 10 percent of your score is affected by having different types of loans.

10% Recent Searches for Credit - A hard inquiry affects your score. A hard inquiry is when you apply for credit through a lender. If you shop for a car and are trying to get an auto loan, don't worry about shopping around for a rate. FICO has an electronic algorithm in place that detects this, and you will not be penalized for rate-shopping within a 2-4 week period.

Does checking your credit affect your score?

Bottom line, no. You cannot hurt your credit score by inquiring about it. However, your credit score will fall if you apply for credit too much. For example, your score is affected if a lender checks your score when you're applying for a loan.

How to check your credit

You can obtain a free copy of your credit report every year from AnnualCreditReport.com. It's important to check up on the health of your credit every year. You should check to see if it's improving. You'll also be able to find out if you're a victim of identity theft.

Having healthy credit takes discipline, but it can be done. Practice the tips outlined in this post and you'll be well on your way to financial independence.

Ways To Finance Your IVF Treatment

Many insurance providers will offer to cover some forms of infertility treatment. However, a great number will restrict this coverage and exclude IVF treatments. This is generally because of the cost of IVF treatments and the lower success rates. This can place a great pressure on couples to secure the funds needed for treatment elsewhere. However, there are a number of alternatives which can allow you to proceed with treatment without going broke.

1. Refinance your home:

If you own your own home, it may be possible to refinance your mortgage or arrange a second mortgage. This is a particularly attractive option if you have a great deal of equity which is tied up in the property. You can decide on the amount required based on figures provided by your IVF clinic and receive the funds at closing.

2. Borrow on your 401K:

Some 401K providers allow the option of borrowing against the funds in your 401K. You should discuss this possibility with your employer to see if it is feasible. A bonus of this option is that if you borrow on your 401K, there are no taxes on the loan to be paid.

3. Borrow from family:

If you have any family members who are in a position to and willing to help with a loan, you can organize an agreement. You should discuss a rate of interest and the repayment terms before making an agreement. This type of borrowing is not affected by credit ratings and will usually be subject to a lower rate of interest than conventional financial institution. This could dramatically reduce the overall cost of your IVF treatments.

4. Low interest credit cards:

Many credit card providers offer very attractive introductory rates for people with good credit. This can allow you to finance your IVF treatment and pay off the balance over a more manageable term.

5. Third-party loans:

Another option for those with good credit is a third-party loan. These are available from a number of lenders and financial institutions. There are even centers which specialize in financing and funding IVF treatments. Your IVF clinic may be able to advise you if there is such a financial center available.

6. IVF clinic financing:

A great number of IVF clinic administrators will be able to advise you if their facility have financing options available. These are generally arrangements with a set rate of interest, which allow you to make a monthly payment. The payment plan can usually be tailored to suit the type of procedures you are using.

7. Get a second income:

It may be possible to supplement your existing income by generating a second income in your spare time. This could be based on your marketable skills or talents or something basic. It is worth taking the time to consider your options and whether a second income is a possibility. There are many free resources available online which provide help and guidance in starting to develop a second income. Even jobs conventionally performed by college or high school students such as babysitting, could produce a second income which would reduce the need for financing your IVF treatments.

Millennials and the Holiday Spirit

Although it may be the holiday season, as far as presents go that doesn't mean a whole lot to Millennials. Like so many other issues, they have their own ideas about gift giving. Apparently what they want is cash, mostly to pay down college costs and other debt.

So much for the negative stereotype that those born between 1980 and 2000 are lazy and have a sense of entitlement. Millennials are laboring under a collective $1 trillion in debt from student loans and still struggling to find jobs. Yet a survey of 6,500 members of the so-called 'Me Generation' indicates that last year well over half of them made donations to charitable causes and volunteered their time.

Money is but one venue for generosity. Kindness is an even more valuable currency. Alan Cohen, author

As the parents of Millennials, no matter what gifts you're giving this year, you probably want to spend holiday time with family. Here are ideas for you and your Millennials that include the spirit of giving back:

Give the gift of connection. Put heart in your relationships. Make a weekly date and take your own parents to lunch, a museum or the movies. Send a card to an old friend you've lost contact with - enclose a photo, your email address and a promise to keep in touch. Drive an elderly neighbor to run errands, the grocery store, a doctor's appointment.

Give to a worthy cause. Get the family together and help cook the holiday meal at a homeless shelter. Pass forward unused gifts or toys. Make a donation to your favorite Aunt's charity of choice. Buy a present for a street person you pass regularly and make eye contact when you give it.

Give of yourself. Invite friends over for a potluck and an evening of fun. Why not cook the main dishes and have them bring an appetizer or dessert? Cut down on expenses by exchanging memories instead of gifts. Create a coupon book filled with orders for good deeds. Add a personal touch by baking cookies with the kids. Show others you care with an IOU for babysitting so they can enjoy a much-needed date night.

Attention is the purest form of generosity. Simone Weil, philosopher

Isn't it time for change in your gift giving rituals? Millennials have the right idea - focus on more connection and less stuff. All it has to cost you is time. Take heart as you give a little that means a lot. And in these challenging times, that's a good lesson for all of us.

4 Factors to Consider Before Taking Online Classes

You have toiled with the thought of going to school for months. After carefully evaluating your personal, professional, and financial responsibilities, you have decided that distance or online learning is the best option. Although this is a preferred option for many working adults, there are four factors you should consider prior to making this commitment.

1. Decide on Learning Platform
First, decide on the best learning platform. The most common reason that many consider distance and online learning is convenience. Due to technological innovations, learners are no longer limited to brick and mortar classrooms. These technologies give them unlimited access to their courses through computers, phones, and tablets. Yet, it is strongly recommended that prospective students decide on the most suitable learning platform that includes 3 major types: asynchronous, synchronous, and hybrid-often referred to as blended.

Asynchronous learning is online delivery that takes place at different times and different places. For example, learners are not required to meet at a designated time or place, yet they will have complete access to their classes through forums and discussion boards. They have the convenience of logging in the site anytime or anyplace without worrying about missing content and requirements. Notable universities such as the University of Phoenix use this form of delivery, as well as others.

In contrast, synchronous learning allows learners to participate at the same time but from different locations. Examples include live streaming videos and web conferencing. This is a preferred method for those who desire more physical interaction with the instructor.

Finally, learners may have the options to choose hybrid or blended courses. Learners can enjoy the best of both worlds. A certain percentage of the class may be spent online while the other half is spent in a traditional classroom. This platform tends to accommodate all major learning styles because visual learners are able to access the content through their computers, phones, or tablets. Auditory learners benefit from receiving a lecture from a live instructor, and tactile learners benefit through synthesis and application. Some online programs may offer this as an option, but it is very common among brick and mortar schools.

2. Level of Commitment
Second, your level of commitment is a factor that should be heavily considered. A common myth is that online classes are easy and require little to no effort. This cannot be further from the truth. In fact, it is quite the opposite. Distance learners can expect to commit an average of 20-35 hours per week on assignments, alone.

This does not include participation requirements. Although the convenience tends to overshadow the rigor, it is important to remember that more effort is required to succeed due to several reasons that include the absence of a physical instructor. Although several colleges and universities are doing a great job of offering support services to help distance learners become more acclimated. Generally, it is not mandated for students to take advantage of all service. Therefore, it leaves the responsibility of learning to the students.

3. Financial Aid
A third factor for consideration is financial aid. Although distance learning has some great perks, you will pay for this convenience and access. Financial aid packages for traditional and virtual colleges and universities are generally the same: Pell, scholarships, grants, and student loans. For some higher learning institutions, Pell, scholarships, and grants may cover the total cost of education. Because many of the virtual institutions are private, they tend to be more expensive-although some are making great strides to offer more attractive financial aid packages that include employee discounts and scholarships.

If cost is a major concern, it may be advantageous to look at community colleges. Many of these institutions have partnerships with universities which allows them to offer the convenience of distance learning in both academic and technical programs at lower cost, while giving students the academic support and guidance needed to succeed.

4. Technological Infrastructure
Finally, it is important that learners have the required technological infrastructure, which serves as the fundamentals for distance or online learning. For example, most virtual universities or distance learning programs requires learners to meet certain technology requirements such as: computer with high speed internet, printer, and other basic office equipment that will be used to enhance the overall learning experience. In addition, many require the latest version of Microsoft Office and an updated version of your browser.

In conclusion, distance or online learning serves as a great opportunity for busy adults to get the education and training needed, and it gives them the flexibility to maintain their personal and professional lifestyles. Yet, it strongly recommended that prospective learners to the necessary research to become highly informed about distance learning and its requirements to make well-informed decisions.
