When you entered into the world of work, and took up your current job, did you expect that you would grow within it; that you would learn new skills, and develop and enhance your abilities, and your experience in your given field? Was the reality something different? Do they just have you making the tea all of the time?
No matter what your job, whether it be a burger chef, or a doctor, or a rocket scientist, or a pop star (or karaoke singer), it is nice to feel that you can progress, and that you are growing in some way. It is nice to feel that your job means something, other than the paycheck you receive at the end of every week. If it doesn't bring you any fulfillment, and there is little or no room for growth, then this begs the question... is it time to leave?
Isn't That Just The Way It Is?
Sometimes it is necessary to take a job that you know is not suitable for you in the long term. You already get the feeling that there will be no such thing as growing in this job, but you need the spare cash to help you get by; to compliment your student loan, or to pay the rent. It has to be done, but during this time you can be looking for something that you will find more rewarding moving forward.
If you entered a job expecting growth and opportunity, then the situation is similar, though the initial shock and disappointment can add an extra factor in the ordeal. You may have entered what you thought was your dream career, one that you would advance through for years to come, only to find that your boss is only interested in keeping you at the bottom of the pile.
How To Know If There Is No Room For Growth
It will be quite easy to tell if you are not growing in your job:
You are not learning anything new.
You are never excited for work.
You can guess with a reasonable amount of accuracy what will happen, and what you will be doing; everyday.
You feel stressed and/or underwhelmed with work, and rarely feel rewarded.
You watch the clock.
You feel stagnant, and you can not foresee a change.

If you feel undervalued, and like you are never given enough responsibility, then it may be time for a change. If you feel like the opportunity to progress and advance will never come, despite your best efforts to achieve and grow, then it may be time for a change. Understandably, this can be a difficult decision to have to make, and one that is made tougher if you love the idea of working in the industry, and feel affiliated with the company. You have to be realistic, and know your own value; know that you want to grow.
Do not be afraid to speak up, and ultimately to look for something that will help you to grow and feel happy. If you need help leaving your current job, searching for a new one, or you need to speak to someone to help you deal with the confusion, our expert career counselors are on hand today.
How To Deal With A Stagnant Work Situation
Be sure that it is not you that is stopping your own growth; are you volunteering your skills, putting in effort, and making the most of opportunities at work?
If you are doing all you can, consider whether there is actually any opportunity available for growth. Talk to staff that have been there longer. Be sure not to be negative.
If you feel the company is seriously impeding your growth, talk to your boss.
Begin to think about, and look for other options.
If you do not see an improvement, despite your best efforts, and your expression of your dismay, consider a move.
