Today at Starbucks I ended up giving an ad hoc lecture to a couple of college students studying history. A young man and woman, Hispanic 20 and 21 years of age, and we talked about their future, their student loans, desires to start a business, finish school and get married and have kids. They admitted that even though traditionally their families had started having kids at 17 and through their 20s, they did not see that in the picture until they were maybe 28-30 and then only having 1-2 kids and definitely not more than 3. Their past generation both had at least 6-10 kids, but they just don't see that as possible due to economic constraints. Let's talk.
It turns out that we still have a US birth slump since 2009-2010, even if back then it was blamed on the recession and economic chaos of 2008. Today the economy has returned and although not firing on all-cylinders quite yet due to a "socialist-style" leadership in the oval office, our economic picture is better than it was in 2009-2010 but birth rates have not increased (Cite: "Surprising facts about birth in the United States," article on BabyCenter [dot] com).
The article also noted: "Age of first-time moms - Over the last three decades, women have been waiting longer to start having children. In 1970 the average age of a first-time mother was about 21. In 2008 the average age was 25.1" and I suspect that number will be advancing at an even faster pace now due to the concerns that these two young people stated. I agree with them, they need to wait. In fact, both of their parents advised them to do the same, and when they asked me, I too reiterated the need to wait to start their family until they were financially stable.
Still, I wonder when that might actually be considering the cost of those student loans and their prospects for making money. Now then, this has me daring to question authority, question our government, and question the need for everyone to go to college? So, I ask: "Is The Economic Enslavement Caused by High Tuition and Student Loans Slowing US Birth Rates?" After thinking about this over a cup of coffee and thinking about all the young people I know and meet and listening to their stories, I can safely answer this question with an unequivocal; YES! My last question is for you my reader, what do you think about all this? Please consider it and think on it.
