I've said it before and I'll say it again, those running our academic industrial complex are not as wise as they would have you believe. Plato once told his followers that philosophers were the wisest, and they'd written the most for the human record, and yet, isn't that a little self-serving. Not that Plato was not a learned man or wise for his time, but it is arrogant to assume that philosophers were the smartest of human populations.
Today, it seems we have a resurgence of that academic arrogance of so-called wisdom, and yet, little or no reflection or empirical evidence of their mental acumen. In fact, in hindsight, look what they've done to their own learning institutions. Might I be so bold as to ask; if they can't do any better than that, why should we listen to them at all?
Okay so, before I get much into the Q&A of this lecture, let's talk about some details, data points, and facts for a moment. There was an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal on August 6, 2013 titled; "Many Can't Pay Student Loans," by Josh Mitchell which noted the high percentages of loan defaults, most of which was blamed on the economy, but maybe the academic world should look in their own mirror, after all, much of the Obama Administration does come from the academic sector, and it looks like they don't have their own house in order (academia) so, why are they telling us how to run the public's business?
No, this is nothing new, in fact, in July of 2009, California University System was busy cutting staff, outsourcing libraries, and raising tuition. Eventually, grad students were teaching the classes. Things have just gotten significantly worse over the years I'd say. College tuition has skyrocketed, student loan defaults are up, and we now have a $1.2 Trillion (with a T) liability out there, with a much higher default rate on the horizon it seems.
Not long ago, out in Southern California, I met someone in a coffee shop and gave them one of my monologues on what's wrong with the politically correct, left-leaning world of academia, and somewhere during my ad hoc lecture, I stated; "Does the academic elite really stand on the shoulders of giants, or do they stand on top of Bandini Mountain?" which got a laugh from them, and several others on nearby tables listening in or overhearing our dialogue. If you didn't get that pun Bandini Mountain is a small foothill made of fertilizer from the company Bandini Fertilizer, which was made popular in the 1980s era TV commercials by the firm.
And that's no BS either!
