The Story of "Down in the Dumps Don" and Why Your Perfect Job May Not Be A Perfect Fit For You

Don Schwarzer is a fictional character in this article and his nickname is "Down in the Dumps Don". Rosie Wright is also a fictional character and her nickname is Resume Rita. Though the characters are fictional, the stories are real and are intended to help readers relate to occurrences such as these in the workplace. We hope you enjoy them and more importantly, learn from our stories.

"Down in the Dumps Don" is currently attending a local college and is hoping to graduate in 2014 with his degree in accounting and finance. He has several thousands of dollars in student loans to pay back and is currently working for a local insurance company as a claims clerk but has decided to pursue a higher paying position because: a) he is more educated; b) because he is in debt up to his ears; and c) because he wants to be a manager. After all, his wisdom (now that he has completed four years of college) should be worth something. He has been down in the dumps because everyone he has spoken to about his degree and future job search have been telling him accountants are a "dime a dozen" and he probably won't be getting the job of his dreams. He was playing the "woe is me" game and he wanted to do something about it.

So, Down in the Dumps Don calls a local resume writer (Resume Rosie) and says, "I am close to graduating from college and I want a razor sharp resume to match my talents, my skills, my experiences, and most of all, one that will get me a dream job in a six figure income". After several seconds of silence and thinking to herself "that is a dream!", Resume Rita asked him if he had a current resume he could send her to review. She went on to tell him she would review it, make recommendations and possibly ask some questions of him before she writes it up. Down in the Dumps Don said he would send the resume, proceeded to ask a few questions about the pricing, and then agreed to wait for her response. While Resume Rita was taking notes, Down in the Dumps Don continued telling her about all the jobs he had had in his very experienced past and how important it was to include his vast experience in his resume. Resume Rita took note of it.

The next day, Resume Rita, took a look at his resume. Quite a few jobs were listed and Resume Rita's first thoughts upon reviewing it was "Wow, that is quite a few jobs all for short periods of times". She further noted that only two of these positions required any type of accounting with the majority being more human resource related jobs such as recruiting, job posting, and other general human resource administrative duties. She then emailed him and asked the following:

1). Why so much job jumping?
2). What makes you believe you are worthy of a 6 figure income?
3). What kinds of companies are you targeting?
4). What value do you feel you can add to an accounting manager position and what makes you unique among other applicants?

He later called her and explained that he job jumped because many of the positions were temporary jobs or jobs he felt he was under qualified and therefore quit to pursue other positions. He felt he was much wiser now and deserved a high end job and mentioned he had to pay back his loans. He was targeting larger corporations because they paid more and benefits were much better. He could add tremendous value because he had not only the experience but now he had formal training and a wide range of knowledge. he was unique to other applicants because he had the personality that makes people like him and want to work for him. He elaborated that friends always told him he should manage people because he was a good friend to everyone he met.

Resume Rita listened intently to his answers but felt a glaring need to tell him that he needed to come down from his high horse and face the reality of NOT getting a job in the short term for a six figure salary. Rather than bursting his bubble all at once, she asked him to complete a short assessment that would determine if, in fact, he had the proper discipline to be happy in a job in this field. At first, he didn't understand the need but agreed to do so when she told him there was a nominal fee but a huge reward by completing it. She emailed the link to complete the assessment the following day.

So, the next day, Down in the Dumps Don went online and answered the questions on the assessment and went about his daily routine. The completion of the assessment took about 10 minutes and he just knew he was going to prove to Resume Rita that he, in fact, was THE MAN for this high paying position he would have in the very near future. The assessment results would be in Resume Rita's hands within minutes of completion and an email sent to her within seconds indicating he had completed it with the complete results.

Resume Rita received the report through email and she reviewed it that night. She was right on her initial impression about Down in the Dumps Don. He was a very influencing person who would sometimes over sell, not only himself, but anything else he wanted people to buy. He could sell an Eskimo a block of ice! Typically people like him were more suited in sales positions and not suited for management positions. He might be dealing with accounting and finance but not as a manager. These assessments had high accuracy ratings but there was still work to be done to confirm the results. She had to have a further discussion with him to go over the results and to dig further. A face to face meeting was in order.

Resume Rita's agenda was to discuss how to get past the job hopping questions an employer might ask, to help him face the reality that a six figure income wasn't imminent, to help him communicate and sell himself without overdoing it, and to help him target a job that would make him happy.

After meeting with him, both Resume Rita and Down in the Dumps Don agreed that the future might be quite different than he imagined. He also knew that the six figure income would have to come from somewhere else besides managing people in a corporate environment. He decided to pursue a sales position selling accounting software. He was very good at it and earned several large sales bonuses as a result. He didn't have to sacrifice working with people because his clients were his people fix. He also didn't refer to himself as Down in the Dumps Don anymore. He had his dream job. He wasn't in the six figure income yet but he could see it in his future. His loans were getting paid and he was living a comfortable life. He could communicate well to others and he was a success.

He reflected on the day he first met with Resume Rita and thought about what it would have been like sitting in an office working with accountants. It wasn't for him and he was so happy she helped him realize it. Don had his trials and tribulations in his career but then again, doesn't everybody? Besides, he had his go to person for help whenever he couldn't solve a problem himself... Resume Rita (she does more than resumes. She helps people and companies be the best they can be!)
